Political/ Historical Okay kids, here's where we're going to try and hook ya up with some of this country's ignored labor history. Events and people to be proud of that you'll typically never hear about. One of the bests books I've read on this topic is called "Labor's Untold Story" which I strongly suggest everyone read. Anyone want to suggest other or better links to us, please do! Labour Leader, Socialist, and one time congressman, who served time in prison twice during his life: once in 1895 for his actions as union leader, and again after World War I, for speaking out against our involvement in the war.
The twentieth century labour movement in North America produced a unique orator and union organizer; a 16 year old girl, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. ...was an event specific to Arizona that influenced the labor movement throughout the United States. What started as a labor dispute between copper mining companies and their workers turned into vigilante action against the allegedly nefarious activities of the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.). (1869-1940) stands as a major figure in the history of American radicalism and feminism. An influential and well-known anarchist of her day, Goldman was an early advocate of free speech, birth control, women's equality and independence, union organization, and the eight-hour work day. COINTELPRO was the FBI's secret program to undermine "radical" political opposition inside the US. (be sure to scroll down page) |
